The ASB Theatre (formerly known as the Aotea Centre) underwent a major refurbishment in 2011, 21 years after first opening in 1990. The look changed from aging recessed incandescent downlighting to linear led profile lighting recessed in the acoustic ceiling panels and concealed in the perimeter coves.
This installation is an example of white LED as it was just coming into viability as a principal source for general white lighting, and utilises LED Linear's Apollo and Aton Plus Flexible LED engines. It is a great testament that after nearly a decade, the LED engines are still maintaining their high colour consistency and output.
Another unique feature was in the special LED DMX dimming drivers that use a patented 14-bit dimming technology to enable totally smooth dimming from the existing 8-bit DMX lighting desk, which replicates incandescent-like dimming from the LEDs.
